March 22 - The first patent for lasers is granted to Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes.
July 1 - The U.S.S.R. shoots down a U.S. aircraft in the Barents Sea.
August 11 - Discoverer 13 is launched by the U.S. Air Force, and the capsule parachutes back into the sea.
August 13 - The first two-way telephone conversation is held via satellite.
September 25 - The first atomic powered aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Enterprise, is launched in the U.S.
September 26 - The first televised Presidential candidate debate is held between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy.
October 7 - Presidential candidates Richard Nixon and John Kennedy hold their second televised debate.
October 20 - The New York Times is published for the first time simultaneously in New York and Paris.
October 25 - The first electric watch is produced in New York.
November 8 - John F. Kennedy is elected to be the 35th U.S. President.
November 9 - A commercial atomic reactor in Rowe, Massachusetts is the first in the U.S. to produce power.
December 19 - The aircraft carrier Constellation catches fire in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
